‘The beginning is the end is the beginning is the end’ - Michael Haneke
A study on lines. I measured the outline of my body —1133 cm— and translated this to a metal loop to study flows of movement in spaces which I encountered everyday in the art academy. As a simple form that has the quality to create volume without having any mass, the line is a minimal intervention that has a big impact on human behavior.
Line
In a space with four walls, a floor and a ceiling one might feel a sense of emptiness. One wanders around, giving an impression of not knowing where to go. It made Elisa look for places where she felt safe. She stayed close to the wall, in corners or transition spaces.
The two spaces, gallery 1 and gallery 2, are similar in size and quality of the materials. The biggest differences are the ceiling that is much higher in gallery 2 and gallery 1 that has a door to the hallway which makes gallery 2 more private. I hung the metal loop on the ceiling in the middle of Gallery 1. Elisa seemed intrigued and observed visually at first. Later she began to involve her body and research the loop.
By placing the loop, more safe spaces appeared in her opinion, through its relation with the surfaces. I like to call them subspaces.
The most interesting moment of observing her was when after a while she walked to gallery 2, the space without the loop. Empty as it was before when she was looking for the safe spaces, this time she seemed to have a clear idea on how to behave in the space. She applied the same movements as she did when researching the loop in gallery 1 as if it was there. The loop was present in its absence.
